Curly Girl Method for Beginners

If you have naturally curly hair, you may have heard about the curly girl method, and wether or not products are “curly girl method approved.” Originally started by Loraine Massey, the curly girl method is a guide for what ingredients to avoid in your products for healthy curls. You can read more about her philosophy in her book Curly Girl: The Handbook.

When you first begin transitioning back to your naturally curly hair, or are new to styling curly hair, it can be extremely overwhelming with all the information out there. It’s crucial to read the ingredients label when buying curly hair products, because the majority of hair products at the drugstore are formulated with sulfates and silicones.

In this video, I’ve simplified the steps for how to follow the curly girl method.

1. Stop using products with sulfates

Sulfate is a detergent that is found in shampoos and causes the bubbly lather and “clean” feeling we’re all used to. Sulfates are not bad per se, but because curly hair is naturally very dry, sulfates strip curls of natural oils causing frizz, tangles, breakage, excess shedding, etc.

Common sulfate ingredients:

  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate
  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Sodium Alkylbenzene Sulfonate

Mild sulfate ingredients:

  • Sodium Cocyl Isethionate
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate
  • Sodium Socoyl Sarcosinate

Check out this NaturallyCurly.com article for a full list.

2. Stop using products with silicones

Silicone ingredients are often found in conditioners and styling products. Silicones are added to products to help prevent frizz and soften the hair. However silicones are not water soluble, meaning they cannot be removed with sulfate-free shampoo causing build up on curls and scalp. Oftentimes curls are limp and weighed down. You can check out my video here on my curly hair journey to see how much curlier my hair got after quitting silicones for good.

Common silicone ingredients:

  • Dimethicone
  • Cetearyl Methicone
  • Amodimethicone

Check out this NaturallyCurly.com article for a full list.

Other ingredients to avoid with the curly girl method are alcohols and parabens. Alcohols are often found in mousse and hairspray and can dry out curls.

  1. Late to the party here Gena, but have been going through all of your YouTube vids and am really glad that I found you. After years with DevaCurl I'm now trying to find products to replace them. This has meant pretty much starting over with the curly girl method, which has been so frustrating. My hair is back to a big frizz blob. Looking forward to purchasing some of your recommendations (have a big order that I'm putting in now), and hoping I can get back to soft and conditioned curls. Thanks!
